Sooo... just a quick background on myself. I'm a Guild Wars player of years past... having had a great time at that time, I only really stopped playing very much when life got hardcore in the way. (marriage, school, etc.) These days I'm looking at having a bit more time, depending on homework levels (grad school).
However, I'm not sure if I should pick up GW again. I really want to, I want to get back into a MMO that I understand and that I can remember having a lot of fun with. I was never a super hardcore player, but enjoyed playing different aspects of the PvE game. I was going to start playing one of the F2P MMOs (ie LOTRO, EQ2, etc) but I would really prefer Guild Wars when it comes down to it.
Is the game still fun to play? Are there enough people around to still enjoy playing the game? If I started over again (which is the plan), what would be the class that people would still need the most of in the game? My mains in the past were a ranger and a warrior, both of whom I enjoyed. However, at this point, I'm wanting to get more into the casting aspect of the game.
So here's a couple of questions then:
1) What class should I choose that will be a great learning experience (read basically no experience with casters here) and still needed in your average party? I've been considering monk... but so many negative things said about them these days.
2) Is the game still worth playing? Or have things just gotten to the point where it's the hardcore community grinding out titles and that's just about it?
3) And finally, give one reason why you'd play Guild Wars over other current F2P games on the market. There must be at least one, or you wouldn't be here.
1) Ritualist: They very useful in the average party, alone or in some of the more "hardcore" stuff. They can also do different types of play: Spirit Spammer, Caster, Healer or Party Prot.
2) I personally would have to say the game isn't worth playing. I have been playing since a few months after release quit for a while then came back after eotn. I caught up with everything including the more recent stuff of War in Kryta. If you haven't played in 6 months or more I would suggest coming back as they have added more stuff to the PvE side and plan to add more which I will probably do after it comes out.
3) I play(ed) Guild Wars over F2P MMOs because I personally hate leveling. I want the end-game of MMOs as thats where I have most fun. Before GW I did WoW PvP at 70 but quit for the increased level cap. Now on GW when i do play I do DoA, FoW and Dungeons with my guild. I have tried Allods Online and Perfect World to get rid of my GW addiction for a new one but their leveling process stopped me.
There are still some good active guilds if you are the party type. But solo with heroes and henchmen is all I play these days. If the years back did not include Nightfall, you need to get Nightfall and Eye of the North. Then you will have good set of heroes and Eye of the North has the Dungeons where you will find most of the grouping action. If you go Ritualist, you will want to start in the Factions Chapter of course, then to Nightfall, then to Eye of the North. There is enough here to keep you busy.
Of free to download, free to play ... Perfect World seemed to me the best. I played a Venomancer to about level 35 and it was a lot of fun to that point. But then it was just grindy repetitious after that and I quit. You want to avoid their online store which will rip you off horribly. But you can do a couple quests to expand your storage along the way. The user interface really stinks, be warned. And the music makes you feel like you are in a Chinese restaurant.
Yes, for me. For you? I don't know? Log in and find out.

In my opinion it doesn't matter what class you have. Have one of every class.

Again it doesn't matter. Most people, who have heroes, will use monk and/or necro/rit heroes for healing. With the introduction of PvE only skills (You Move Like a Dwarf, Ebon Vanguard Assassin Support, etc) you can be a major pew pew with any class.

Yes, it is still worth playing in my opinion. There are the tardcore but there are many new players still coming in to the game. A lot of the older players are working on filling their Hall of Monuements and maxing titles.

I don't play any other MMO's because one is enough. One consumes enough time out of my life.

1) Which chapters do you own? Rit is a good choice, but I have at least one of every class and still enjoy them all. If you have NF and/or EOTN, then you can take heroes to help and not worry too much about not finding a team.
2) I also started back in the beginning and still have characters that I'm playing through the storylines. I still enjoy it. Everyone's different though. Why not roll a caster and play it, then roll another class and try it out, etc, before deciding which to carry on with?
Since you already own the game, what's really keeping you from playing? It isn't like you have to spend any money and with just a little investment of time you can get back into it.
3) a) It's just the way I'm wired I guess. I pick up a game and stick with it. I played Wizardry for years before GW, and now have been playing it for years with just the occasional return to Wizardry or Age of Empires.
b) I'm part of a guild and alliance that I enjoy. Casual, long term team mates, fun, stable, etc. Regular events. Good stuff.
ScryingWind, nobody has mentioned it but surely you know? Guild Wars 2 is coming out in about a year! So playing GW you really have something to look forward to! GW2 will also be free to play, no monthly fee.
http://www.guildwars2.com/en/ and watch the video. This will be a RPG/MMO like no other with truly amazing features.
Completing your Hall of Monuments in GW Eye of the North will give you goodies of some sort in GW 2, but exactly what is to be announced "soon." Stay tuned!
1) Any class can play the Mobile Spirits build, but the Ritualist excels at it. I wouldn't create a Ritualist just for that simply because as long as you're running a decent builds PuGs will usually accept you.
2) That depends on whether you want to PuG everything or not. If you're ok with playing solo at times, then there is no problem for you. Otherwise, you'll either have to stalk the Zaishen Quest with your already established characters or simply not bother with it at all.
3) Because Gilworz doesn't suck as hard as the others and since you've already paid for it.
Location: Rhode Island where there are no GW contests
Guild: Order of First
Profession: W/R
You might want to check out what is said about the newly F2P MMOs. I have heard that LOTRO is frustrating as a F2P because you have to buy almost everything in the cash shop including quest packs. EQ2 is also reported as not being much fun as a F2P.
You should note that there is a big difference in F2P and B2P. These are the new definitions of free games. F2P covers LOTRO, EQ2 and RoM - all of which are free downloads and then to play the game properly you will have to constantly spend money in the cash shop. B2P is now the term for games (if there are others) like GW or the upcoming GW2, which will be buy the game and the rest is free. The GW cash shop will not affect your gaming life.

This, pretty much. I've been quitting, getting readdicted, quitting and getting readdicted over the last 2 years, there's always stuff to do, people to play and hang out with and newbies to help. As for the caster class, I found ritualist fun in the beginning but boring very fast. My monk is still my main squeeze and will always be, but you really have to be a healing geek to choose monk these days, ER infusers and N/Rt hero healers get the preference nowadays. Even though monks are still the most versatile and competent healers, any other class except ranger is more useful in high end PvE simply because your healing ability isn't really neccesary anymore because of PvE skills like SY!, imbagons, spirit spammers, minion bombers and hybrid N/Rt / Me/Rt / N/Mo hero builds. I find necro the coolest and elementalist the easiest. If you have no experience with caster classes I definetely recommend either necro or elementalist. And then theres the mesmer, theres nothing alike the mesmer in any MMO I've played and they are certainly fun and classy but definetely not easy to play and, even though they recently got buffed, not the best damage dealers. If interrupting, crowd control and manipulation is your thing, you should try it out anyway!
Just my opinions on the classes, GW is designed to let anyone play any class they want to. The time you've played determines your knowledge and skill, is what Anet tried to put into GW. IMHO, they've succeeded and deserve eternal glory.
1) Necros are fun to play, and often welcomed/needed in groups. Rits are pretty popular at the moment since they are slightly overpowered in some ways, and are very versatile. As for monks, they are not going to be in GW2 so if you need a healing-fix now is the time.
2) Yes it is still worth playing. I suggest you find yourself a pve guild that does balanced play (as opposed to the 'speed clear' meta). I came back to the game a few months ago after a 2+ year gap, and have been really enjoying doing hard mode dungeons and other high end content.
3) Haven't found a F2P MMO that I enjoy more than GW.
Play a Mesmer starting in Prophecies. Thats where I started mine (way back in 2007). In almost any RPG I'll play, I play someone who wields a melee weapon and bashes stuff, lol. But Guild Wars (and Diablo 2) have been the exception. The Mesmer is an awesome class. Note how I began playing one in 2007. I didn't start the game until Early 06'. Every attempt between those two years with the Mesmer failed everytime. I didn't like it..etc. It was then when I decided to take the time to read about the Mesmer and slowly learn it's full abilities, I loved it. Like I said, start one in Prophecies, enjoy Pre-Searing all over again but with a new class for you, the Mesmer.
Basically, rather than deal damage directly, the Mesmer can cast hexes that will cause your attacker to damage themselves. In PvE the Mesmer can really do well because you're playing against AI who have no brains at all. So anti-melee and anti-caster spells really rock stuff up in PvE. Also you can get really good with interrupting. I went from someone who hated Mesmers like the majority crowd back then and learned to love them just by taking the time to learn about them. Also, if you do make one in Pre-Searing, before you leave head to the Northlands and go destroy some charr. Empathy for the warriors, Backfire for the nasty caster bosses, they all fall down.
Unfortunately for my Mesmer he was deleted later that year and moved to a PvP-Only character where he remains today. This was because I really started PvP'ing with him a ton and decided to abandon PvE with him for a while, so I remade into PvP so he could have every skill and gear without having to buy them in PvE. But, I am going back through PvE (Prophecies) with a new Mesmer and it's skills are pretty devastating. I'll tell you, at the point I first made a Mesmer in PvE it sorta renewed the game and gave it a whole new aspect that I hadn't seen or felt since my first days playing the game.
Welcome back and Enjoy your stay. PM Me here on Guru if you have questions or concerns about my post, I'll be happy to help.
i still have lots of fun with my main, or alts, with guildies and alone, but i dont play it hardcore, i are still lots of content that i havent done and im playing since the launch.
most people say that the best learning curve is Nightfall but i prefer making my chars in prophecies. if you want to try a casting class you should go with mesmer, necro or rit.
the fun factor depends on waht you are planning to do and which content you own. i spend most of my time nowadays vanquishing and slowly improving my titles. i farm the gifts of traveler most of the weeks and do some zaishen/ War in kryta bouties.
i also do some farming runs from time to time but that is boring to me
get your wifey to play with you, otherwise i'd say it's not worth it.
I totally agree with this statement!
Both my wife and I have been playing this game since launch.. yes we have taken breaks over the years.. but we always come back to it!
to answer your questions:
1) I would suggest a necro (but I'm biased as its my main toon, has been for a very long time now) They are pretty adaptable to the entire series of games.. shouldnt have too much trouble finding parties (if there are any) with that class.. very interesting to play with various options in play style
2) This is a tough one. The game is still very playable.. but its much harder to find parties with other people. Most other people with be a jerktard and "expect" you to run certain builds all the time. best to find a decent casual pve guild. they wont have those standards there that make playing the game so unenjoyable. If you have Nightfall and EoTN then you have access to heros.. You can pretty much handle all of the story line in all chapters alone with heros with little troubles.
3)Cant speak for most games.. but I tried WoW (my wife begged me to try it with her) and I absolutely hated it! I am not dedicating hours upon hours of my time farming and grinding to lvl or to get armor or weapons with certain statistics to help me play. GW has that if you want to farm.. but you arent required to do it. its a very "User Friendly" MMO meaning you can choose what you want to do.. be it quest and get the lore of the game... or wander around and look at the beauty the developers created... or farm your ectos for you overpriced silly weapons( which do not give you any advantages).. its all there!
To me GW always was a single-player game with multi-player capabilities. You basically play the game through alone and when you're done, you go on doing titles, completing stuff you've left out, replaying with other characters, and experiencing the immense amount of content. If you're the social type then you can do all that with other players. If you enjoy competition, you can show your skill in arena matches.
It's a great single player game, and it's a great multi-player game. One thing it's not, and that's an MMO. You don't meet others on the way between towns, you don't need to farm XP for level up, you will not be spawncamping and enduring the KS-ing PK-ing ways of the griefers. Thankfully you do not need to experience any of that in Guild Wars.
To answer your question, GW is worth playing, as long as you feel like you still have stuff to do. When you feel you're done, move on to something else.
Ellys, Necros and Rits are the best classes you can play IMO.
They are amazing and can do loads of stuff. I recently discovered the joy of soul twisting with rejuvenation + agony ..... My Rit will never be the same again.
